6100 teachers to be recruited from 2023 cohort – Education Minister
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has responded to peaceful protests by unposted teachers demanding postings. He reiterated that the education sector is Ghana’s largest employer and assured that resolving the issue of unposted teachers is a government priority.
The minister revealed that Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 6,100 teachers from the 2023 graduate cohort, who are fully accounted for in government records. These new recruitments aim to reduce the backlog of unposted educators.
“Education remains Ghana’s largest employer. We’ve given approval to recruit an additional 6,100 teachers from the 2023 cohort to address this,” he stated.
He urged protesting teachers to return to their offices to complete verification and audit processes necessary for their official postings and payment. “I’m surprised if those on the streets are the same teachers who should be completing the verification. They should be at their offices to be reinstated and paid,” the Minister emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers from the Colleges of Education, representing 2022 and 2023 graduates who have passed their licensure exams and completed national service, staged demonstrations starting at Tema Station in Accra. The group plans to march to Jubilee House to submit a petition to the presidency after repeated appeals to government went unanswered.
