A supporter of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was allegedly stabbed during the party’s Thank You Tour in Bantama, Kumasi, on April 29, 2025, sparking concerns over rising political tensions within the party.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident unfolded amid a heated confrontation between a group of students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and individuals alleged to be party vigilantes. The altercation reportedly began when the students, who had been mobilized to welcome Agyapong, attempted to prevent the armed men from seizing cash that had been distributed after the event. The situation escalated as the assailants brandished pistols, fired warning shots into the air, and ultimately stabbed one of the students in the upper right rib.
The injured supporter was initially taken to Suntreso Hospital but was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for advanced medical care. Medical staff at the hospital confirmed the victim was in stable condition after undergoing minor surgery.
Images from the scene show the victim receiving treatment, with police present as Agyapong’s team filed a formal report. Authorities have launched an investigation and retrieved spent bullet casings from the area, but no arrests have been confirmed as of Wednesday morning.
The violent episode has intensified scrutiny over internal divisions within the NPP. In response, Kennedy Agyapong has reportedly withdrawn from the ongoing Thank You Tour, citing the need to preserve peace and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. Party insiders and observers are urging unity and swift action to address the growing factional tensions as the NPP prepares for the 2024 general elections.
