Africa’s digital transformation presents enormous opportunities for economic growth, innovation and public service delivery. However, the continent’s growing dependence on digital systems also exposes governments, businesses and citizens to cybercrime, ransomware, data breaches and attacks on critical infrastructure.
Building Africa’s cyber resilience must therefore become a continental priority. No country can effectively confront increasingly sophisticated cyber threats in isolation, particularly when attacks can cross borders within seconds.
The challenge requires stronger national cybersecurity institutions, modern legal frameworks, skilled professionals and effective incident-response systems. Governments must also invest in cybersecurity education, protect critical infrastructure and strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors.
At the continental level, the African Network of Cybersecurity Authorities (ANCA), established under the auspices of Smart Africa, has an important role to play in coordinating this collective response.
Its core mandate is to facilitate cooperation among national cybersecurity authorities, promote the exchange of information and expertise, strengthen incident-response capabilities, support capacity building and encourage the harmonisation of cybersecurity policies and legal frameworks.
It also provides a platform for African countries to coordinate their approaches to shared cyber threats and strengthen the continent’s voice in international cybersecurity discussions.
For ANCA to deliver on this mandate, member states must move beyond dialogue towards practical cooperation. Regular joint exercises, timely threat-intelligence sharing, coordinated responses to cyber incidents and sustained investment in technical expertise should become central to the network’s work.
Equally important is the need to build trust among governments, businesses and citizens. Cyber resilience is not solely a technological responsibility; it requires effective leadership, sound policies, public awareness and a shared commitment to digital security.
Africa’s digital future will depend not only on how quickly the continent adopts new technologies, but also on how effectively it protects them.
Through stronger national institutions and a coordinated continental response, ANCA and its member states can help build a safer, more resilient and trusted African digital ecosystem.
