Ablakwa Refutes $5.2 Million Benin Embassy Renovation Claims

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has vehemently denied allegations of awarding a $5.2 million contract for the renovation of Ghana’s embassy in Benin.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Monday, Minister Ablakwa urged the public to “treat with utter contempt the false claims” regarding the contract. He clarified that since taking office, he has not authorized any embassy renovation or construction projects.

“For the record, I have not awarded any embassy renovation contract anywhere in the world,” he wrote. “Let me be clear—not a single embassy renovation or construction contract has been awarded by me since I became Foreign Minister.”

Ablakwa further stated that he has taken measures to protect public funds by canceling a separate “single source midnight contract” worth $3.5 million for the renovation of the Ghanaian embassy in Abidjan, which was awarded on November 7, 2024. He emphasized that his actions have been aimed at safeguarding taxpayer money rather than engaging in reckless spending.
