ApThe National Apprenticeship programme, One Million Coders Project, and Adumawura Women-in-Trade Initiative: Game Changers in Job Creation

Ghana is witnessing transformative efforts in job creation through innovative programmes targeting youth empowerment and economic inclusion. Among these, the Apprenticeship Programme, the One Million Coders Project, and the Adumawura Women-in-Trade Initiative stand out as pivotal in addressing unemployment and fostering sustainable livelihoods.

The Apprenticeship Programme equips young people with practical skills across various trades, enabling them to gain hands-on experience and improve their employability. This traditional yet revitalized approach bridges the gap between formal education and the labor market, creating a pipeline of skilled workers ready to meet industry demands.

Complementing this, the One Million Coders Project, launched in April 2025 by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, aims to train one million Ghanaians in digital skills such as coding, cybersecurity, and data analytics over the next four years. The initiative, part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Ghana agenda, targets youth from diverse backgrounds-including women, rural dwellers, and persons with disabilities-and seeks to position Ghana as a leading digital talent hub in Africa. With over 90,000 applications received within 48 hours of its announcement, the project reflects strong national interest in digital empowerment and job creation in the tech sector.

Additionally, the Adumawura Women-in-Trade Initiative empowers women traders by providing training, mentorship, and access to resources to enhance their businesses. This initiative not only promotes gender inclusion but also stimulates economic growth by supporting women entrepreneurs who are vital contributors to local economies.

Together, these programmes represent a multifaceted approach to job creation-combining traditional skills, cutting-edge digital training, and targeted support for women in trade. They are reshaping Ghana’s employment landscape, fostering innovation, and driving inclusive economic development.
