Ashanti Regional Minister Orders Investigation into Stabbing of KNUST Student During NPP Thank You Tour

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has directed security agencies to launch a full investigation into the stabbing of a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank You Tour in Bantama, Kumasi.

“Disturbing reports and images from the NPP ‘Thank You Tour’ have come to my attention. I have directed a full investigation into the incident that left a KNUST student critically injured,” Dr. Amoakohene said in a statement.

The incident occurred on April 29, 2025, at the Bantama Pentecost Church, where the event was held. Eyewitnesses reported that the victim, a member of the Jama Group from Unity Hall at KNUST, was stabbed during a confrontation involving armed men believed to be affiliated with the NPP. The altercation reportedly began when the students tried to prevent the armed group from seizing cash that had been given to them after the event. Gunshots were fired into the air during the melee, and the injured student was rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition after surgery.

Dr. Amoakohene also called on the opposition party to conduct their activities peacefully. “We urge the NPP leadership to ensure the tour is conducted peacefully to safeguard the security of our beloved region,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong, a former NPP presidential aspirant whose supporters were involved in the incident, has reportedly withdrawn from the ongoing tour following the stabbing.

The police have retrieved spent bullet casings from the scene and are investigating, but no arrests have been made so far. The Regional Minister’s directive aims to ensure accountability and prevent further violence during political events in the Ashanti Region.
