The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana has condemned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for focusing on personal attacks rather than substantive discussions on national development as the 2024 elections approach.
In a recent interview, Agbana asserted that the NPP’s approach detracts from critical issues such as the economy and job creation, while the NDC remains committed to offering viable solutions. “It is important for us to sanitize our politics and ensure that election 2024 is devoid of insults and personal attacks,” he stated.
Mr. Agbana’s comments come in the wake of a controversial remark made by NPP Member of Parliament Samuel Atta Akyea, who referred to former President John Dramani Mahama as a “drunkard.” This statement has drawn significant backlash and calls for an apology.
In response to the controversy, the NPP Youth Wing, led by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, dismissed the demands for a retraction, accusing the NDC of hypocrisy for not addressing similar derogatory remarks made by its officials against NPP members.
Despite the ongoing exchange of insults, Agbana emphasized the necessity for a more constructive political discourse. He reaffirmed the NDC’s dedication to addressing pressing issues such as employment and economic stability, stating, “The NPP and the NDC are not the same. We will not attack our political opponents; we will not subject them to personal vilification.”
Mr. Agbana called for a reset in political engagement that prioritizes progress and development for Ghana, urging all parties to focus on the needs of the populace rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
