Award-winning Ghanaian journalist and author Manasseh Azure Awuni has opened up about his challenging experiences as an investigative journalist during President Akufo-Addo’s administration. This revelation coincides with the launch of his latest book, The President Ghana Never Got, on August 8, 2024.
In a recent interview, Awuni detailed the significant threats to his life that have marked his career, including instances that necessitated police protection.
He stated, “I’ve personally encountered a lot of woes… I have not had it easy in this administration,” referencing a document allegedly involving him in political controversies. His experiences have led him to seek refuge abroad on multiple occasions, including trips to South Africa and Germany due to death threats received between 2019 and 2021.
The pressure from these threats has also affected his mental health, prompting him to pursue therapy. Awuni emphasized the importance of communicating his struggles to the President, stating that he sought to ensure President Akufo-Addo was aware of his challenges. He even arranged a meeting with the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, to convey his concerns, which surprised her given his access to the President through other channels.
The President Ghana Never Got is a comprehensive 400-page work that delves into the intricacies of Akufo-Addo’s governance and Awuni’s interactions with the administration.
He described the book as containing “revealing and riveting content, which some may find explosive.” This publication continues Awuni’s exploration of political leadership in Ghana, following his previous work on former President John Dramani Mahama titled *The Fourth John: Reign, Rejection & Rebound*.
The book launch was held at the Christ the King Parish Hall, opposite Jubilee House, and is expected to provide critical insights into the current political landscape, reflecting on the nuances that have shaped decisions within the Akufo-Addo administration.
