The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the Electoral Commission of Ghana for failing to provide political parties with copies of the provisional voters register before the upcoming voter exhibition exercise.
During a campaign event in Sogakope on Friday, President Mahama highlighted that the Commission had requested political parties to submit their external drives for the register back in July. Yet, no copies have been distributed as of the end of the day on Friday.
He expressed concern over the lack of communication from the Commission regarding the reasons for this delay, emphasizing the importance of transparency in the electoral process to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised.
The NDC’s call for accountability from the Electoral Commission reflects ongoing tensions surrounding electoral integrity in Ghana, as political parties prepare for the upcoming elections.
However, the Electoral Commission (EC) has responded to concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the provisional voters register ahead of the upcoming voter exhibition exercise.
In a statement, the Commission dismissed the NDC’s claims, asserting that it has adhered to all relevant regulations and timelines. The Commission emphasized that it is committed to ensuring a transparent and efficient electoral process, and any delays in distributing the provisional voters register are being addressed.
The Electoral Commission reiterated its dedication to fair elections and stated that it is working diligently to finalize the voter register in preparation for the upcoming elections. The Commission’s response aims to reassure the public and political parties of its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
