The Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammy Awuku, is under fire on social media platform X for remarks he made regarding the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the 2016 elections.
In a post-dated October 30, 2015, Mr. Awuku, who was then the National Youth Organizer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urged Ghanaian youth to demand new voters register for the upcoming elections.
Awuku criticized the EC’s leadership, suggesting that its “posture and utterances” were setting the stage to deny Ghanaians a credible voter register. He stated, “We will not sit down for our future to be toyed with; the cost of a new credible voters register is cheaper than the cost of violence. Guess it’s time for the youth to arise; we cannot afford to fill the masses in 2016—youth revolution imminent.”
However, his comments have sparked disappointment among many who believe that the NPP’s stance against an audit of the voter register, as called for by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), undermines efforts for credible elections.
Critics argue that Awuku’s previous comments contradict the current position of his party and call into question the integrity of electoral processes in Ghana.
