We Know Voters Register is Bedrock of Credible Elections- EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has acknowledged the significance of a robust voter registers to the credibility and transparency of any election.

The Commission noted that the final register had yet to be compiled in response to a petition submitted by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on September 17 following their nationwide demonstration.

“The Commission wishes to assure the General Public that the process of producing the Final Register is in its early stages,” it said in a press statement.

It continued, “The Commission is mindful that the Voters Register is the bedrock of credible, fair and transparent Elections. We assure the NDC and all Stakeholders of our avowed commitment to delivering a credible and robust Final Register ahead of the December 2024 Elections.”

Meanwhile, the EC said it would review the NDC’s petition and provide a response.

Protest
Under what is called “Enough is Enough Demo”, the NDC hit the streets of the regional capitals of Ghana on September 17 to demand a forensic audit of the country’s electoral roll.

The opposition party has long flagged the register as “unfit for purpose” arguing the roll is full of errors and is certain the audit will answer all their questions.

According to the country’s largest opposition party, their demand for the audit is non-negotiable and essential for safeguarding the credibility of Ghana’s electoral process.

Other stakeholders have joined the calls for an audit of the roll; however, last week, the EC indicated that the calls are misguided.
