The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has enforced an immediate suspension of production for Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, citing severe quality control failures at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited factory. The decision, which marks the second such ban in 2025, follows an investigation that uncovered multiple health and safety breaches.
According to a press statement from the FDA, a recent inspection revealed that faulty sealing systems were compromising the integrity of the product, leading to mold growth, contamination, and pouch bloating, particularly in the 380g and 1.05kg variants. These findings were corroborated by a significant increase in consumer complaints and physical assessments of both canned and pouch products.
As a result, the FDA has initiated a nationwide market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, along with the affected pouches. The public, including retailers and distributors, has been strongly urged to cooperate with the recall to prevent any further health hazards.
The regulatory body has also confirmed that it is conducting an internal review to investigate how Nutrifoods Ghana Limited was able to resume production after a previous ban was issued in January 2025. The FDA has committed to holding any of its officials accountable for potential oversight, promising to take appropriate action to strengthen its regulatory framework.
In the meantime, the production suspension remains in force as the FDA works with the company to implement corrective measures and restore public confidence in the safety and quality of processed food products on the market
