First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has participated in the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) unifying campaign #WeAreEqual, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This event aimed to assess progress made in promoting gender equality and to explore collaborative strategies for enhancing the campaign’s impact.
The #WeAreEqual campaign serves as a call to action for OAFLAD members, focusing on ensuring equitable treatment of women in education, health, economic empowerment, and eradicating gender-based violence. Since its inception two years ago, the campaign has reported significant advancements, supported by testimonies from various countries highlighting their progress.
During the meeting, it was noted that Ghana’s initiative under the campaign has received recognition and awards for its efforts. The Rebecca Foundation has expanded its initiatives to enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes for women and children, improve child literacy, and economically empower women through skills training and financial support.
In her address, Mrs. Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing gender disparities across Africa. She encouraged collaboration among First Ladies and stakeholders to amplify their efforts in advocating for women’s rights and improving health outcomes.
The event underscored OAFLAD’s commitment to closing the gender gap and fostering an environment where women can thrive. As the campaign continues to evolve, it aims to mobilize resources and support from various partners to sustain its momentum and achieve its goals.
This gathering not only highlighted the achievements of OAFLAD but also reinforced the critical role that First Ladies play in advocating for policies that promote health, education, and economic opportunities for women across the continent.
