Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has stepped in to support 47 medical students who were previously sponsored by the late Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has committed to fully covering the students’ education and welfare expenses until they complete their studies.
The announcement was made on August 12 via the Haruna Institute’s official Facebook page. According to the post, Iddrisu’s commitment is a tribute to Dr. Murtala Mohammed’s lasting legacy of investing in education and empowering young people to achieve their goals.
“Hon Haruna Iddrisu pledged to support the 47 medical students taken care of by Comrade Murtala till they complete in honour of Murtala’s legacy,” the post read.
The gesture has received widespread praise online, with many commending Iddrisu for continuing his late colleague’s vision and dedication to education.
Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who served as the MP for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, died on August 6.2 He and seven others were killed when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while en route to Obuasi.3
