Legal expert Martin Kpebu has affirmed that National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has a credible chance of becoming Ghana’s president, contingent on winning the party’s presidential primaries.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion with broadcaster Kojo Yankson, Kpebu highlighted the NDC’s sustained electoral popularity as a key factor in Asiedu Nketia’s potential national success.
“Yes, it’s possible for him to become president because, you know, the NDC still has a lot of goodwill,” Kpebu said.
He noted that in the previous elections, the vote margin between the NDC’s John Mahama and the ruling New Patriotic Party’s Mahmoud Bawumia exceeded 1.6 million votes, a gap he described as unlikely to close within a single election cycle.
Kpebu further explained that if Asiedu Nketia secures the party’s nomination, the full support of the NDC, including former President John Dramani Mahama, would consolidate behind him, enhancing his prospects in the general election.
“What remains is to win the primaries. As for the national one, when they finish winning, he can scrape through,” Kpebu added.
He concluded by emphasizing that the NDC’s goodwill and organizational unity could be pivotal in a national election requiring just over 50 percent of the votes to win.
