Kofi Akpaloo Remains in Custody After Failing to Meet GH₵10 Million Bail Conditions

Kofi Akpaloo, founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) six days after his arrest due to his inability to fulfill the bail conditions set at GH₵10 million with two sureties.

Akpaloo was arrested at his residence in Kumasi on September 3, 2025, as part of an investigation involving multiple financial crimes, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, and money laundering. The Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed the arrest and investigation, stating that Akpaloo was granted police bail on strict conditions but remains in EOCO custody pending the fulfillment of these bail conditions.

The initial GH₵10 million bail has been reportedly reduced to GH₵3.5 million through the intervention of George Boateng, a former National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant. Nonetheless, Akpaloo has still not met the bail requirements. His continued detention has raised concerns, including appeals from members of the political and public spheres for consideration of his health condition and an expedited resolution to his case.

The EOCO investigation forms part of the agency’s intensified crackdown on financial crimes under the leadership of acting Executive Director Raymond Archer, as several other high-profile individuals have also been under scrutiny in recent months.

Kofi Akpaloo, who was also a presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, remains in EOCO custody as legal teams work towards meeting the bail conditions to secure his release. The investigation continues as authorities pursue justice in matters involving state financial crimes.

This ongoing situation underscores the government’s renewed efforts to combat corruption and financial misconduct decisively.
