Kwahu Chieftaincy Affairs: E/R House of Chiefs Rules Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II as Omanhene

The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, in a ruling of Kwahu Chieftaincy brouhaha, has ruled in favour of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, granting an interlocutory injunction restraining Baffour Akoto Osei from interfering with the status, functions, activities, and duties of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, Omanhene of Kwahu Traditional Area.

This follows what the House described as an invalid destoolment attempt that goes against both the customs of the Kwahu Traditional Area and the laws governing chieftaincy in Ghana.

According to the ruling delivered by the House, the application for the injunction was made by Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, who petitioned the House on the basis of illegitimate actions by some Traditional authorities including Nana Simpe Qwiredu III, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng III, Nana Ntim Sampong II, Baffour Nyarko Kyerefo II, Okyeame Akuoko Boateng, Nana Odame Ansong, and Baffour Akoto Osei, attempting to undermine his authority.

During the adjudication session held on 11th June 2025, legal counsel for the applicant argued that Daasebre remains the legitimate Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

“He has not been destooled as the Omanhene,” the counsel emphasized, further referencing Exhibit “A”, a Search Report, which confirms that the applicant is officially registered as the Kwahuhene. The Counsel of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, insisted that the respondent’s claim regarding the destoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II lacks legal merit and does not adhere to the standard procedures recognized under Ghanaian customary and statutory law.

It was explained that, according to established tradition and the Chieftaincy Act, the lawful process for destooling a chief involves bringing formal charges before the Judicial Committee of the Regional House of Chiefs. This process, according to the counsel, had not been initiated in this case.

After reviewing the evidence submitted by the applicant, the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs ruled that the respondents are henceforth restrained from interfering in any form with the functions, status, and duties of Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II in his capacity as the Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area.

Furthermore, the House ruled that Baffour Akoto Osei be prohibited from presenting himself as the Omanhene of the Kwahu Traditional Area or assuming any role, duty, or ceremonial function associated with the position. Specifically, the ruling bars him from performing any function or activity at the Kwahuhene Palace located at Abene.

The New Republic is keenly monitoring this significant development and will continue to provide in-depth updates as the Kwahu chieftaincy matter unfolds.
