Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed profound grief over the death of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia. In a heartfelt message shared on Monday, July 7, 2025, Nana Addo described the loss as a severe blow to both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ghana’s Parliament.
Nana Addo paid tribute to Kumi, highlighting his role as a cherished and respected figure within the NPP and as a passionate representative for the people of Akwatia. He remarked, “The legislator was adored and loved by party faithful and cherished by all who knew or shared acquaintances with him.”
Kumi passed away after a brief illness. His recent absence from parliamentary sessions had raised concerns among his colleagues, and news of his death cast a somber atmosphere over the House.
Parliament suspended its usual proceedings on Monday to honor the memory of Ernest Yaw Kumi. Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, in an official address, stated, “Mr Speaker, one of us has been summoned to the Parliament above. This member was a young politician from the Eastern Region, in his first term in this chamber, carrying with him a promise to contribute to the discourse of our democratic enterprise.”
Afenyo-Markin further praised Kumi’s intellect, diligence, and vibrant personality. He noted the shock among colleagues, as Kumi had been in good health and actively participating in committee work over the weekend, making his sudden passing all the more unexpected.
The loss of Ernest Kumi leaves a significant void in Parliament and among his constituents, with tributes pouring in to honor his service and character.
