Three people, including a four-year-old girl, have been confirmed dead in the Adentan Municipality following torrential rains that caused severe flooding across parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18.
Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, Ella Esiman Nongo, disclosed the fatalities during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday morning.
According to her, the victims were found in different parts of the municipality—Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.
“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” Madam Nongo said.
The floods followed nearly three hours of continuous rainfall that began around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Several communities across the capital, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Tema, and Adenta-Dodowa, were submerged. Roads became impassable, vehicles were abandoned, and the Odaw drain overflowed under the pressure of rising stormwater.
Emergency response teams were deployed to assist affected residents. In Ashiyie, Madam Nongo said, most of the stranded individuals had been rescued.
She, however, raised concern over the scale of destruction and recurring dangers, particularly in areas where homes have been constructed on natural waterways.
“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing,” she stated.
Authorities are continuing assessments and urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain cautious as rains are expected to persist.
