Member of Parliament for Suame,Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has labeled the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) recent report on the Airbus scandal as “scandalous.”
The report, presented at a press conference last week, identified former President John Dramani Mahama as ‘Government Official One’ involved in the international bribery case but concluded that there was no evidence of wrongdoing on his part.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed his concerns during an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM, arguing that the OSP’s assertion of Mahama’s exoneration lacks legal grounding.
He emphasized that the OSP, which operates under the Attorney General’s office, should not claim to clear individuals of wrongdoing, as only a court can provide such a declaration.
He criticized the OSP for relying on insufficient assistance from foreign courts, questioning what they expect in terms of evidence.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), to which Mahama belongs, has consistently maintained that their leader is innocent and has not engaged in any corrupt activities related to the Airbus deal.
The OSP’s report, while heavily redacted for national security reasons, asserts that Mahama’s interactions with Airbus officials were based on good intentions and found no evidence of bribery or corruption in the procurement process for military transport aircraft purchased by Ghana between 2009 and 2015.
