President Akufo-Addo Urges Regional Cooperation to Tackle Africa’s Security Challenges

President Akufo Addo has opened the Second International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEC) 2024, right here in Accra, at the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters.

This gathering brings together key stakeholders from across Africa and beyond to discuss and find solutions to the contemporary security challenges that confront us. It is proof of our commitment to peace, security and stability in Africa.

Africa, despite its remarkable strides in economic growth and political stability, still faces a range of complex security threats that require our urgent attention. From terrorism and violent extremism to organized crime, maritime piracy, and cyber threats, these challenges are becoming more sophisticated and interconnected.

He noted that we must confront them with a coordinated and comprehensive approach. No single country can tackle these threats alone; it is only through enhanced regional cooperation and intelligence sharing that we can hope to overcome them and safeguard our future.

To this end, he urge all African nations to strengthen our regional security mechanisms and enhance our collaboration efforts. Initiatives like the Accra Initiative and the ECOWAS Standby Force are essential frameworks that enable us to work together more effectively. By building capacity, sharing intelligence, and fostering greater unity among our nations, we can create a safer and more secure Africa.

President Akufo Addo stated that  it is also crucial that we address emerging threats such as cybersecurity and climate-induced security risks with the same urgency as traditional threats. This holistic approach will help us build resilience against all forms of insecurity.

He said, he is confident that through unity, collaboration and the unflinching commitment of our leaders, security forces and citizens, we can make considerable progress in creating a continent that is not only secure, but also prosperous and thriving. Let us continue to work closely with our regional and international partners, aligning our efforts with our shared priorities and respecting our sovereignty.

Together, we can build a future where Africa takes charge of her destiny, manages her own security challenges, and contributes significantly to global peace and stability.
