Former Convention People’s Party (CPP) General Secretary Nana Yaa Jantuah has made serious allegations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming that many illegal miners, commonly known as Galamsey operators, are significant financial supporters of the party. In a recent interview, Jantuah asserted that numerous prominent figures within the NPP either own Galamsey concessions or actively facilitate illegal mining operations while providing financial backing to the party.
Madam Jantuah criticized the current administration, stating that illegal mining activities have worsened since President Akufo-Addo took office. She claimed, “Four out of five people you witness engaged in Galamsey are NPP members. If they are prevented from participating in Galamsey, they constantly threaten to quit funding the party.” This statement was made during an appearance on Accra-based Original TV, where she emphasized the need for party members to distance themselves from these illegal activities.
Furthermore, Nana Yaa Jantuah accused the government of using the fight against Galamsey as a facade to enrich themselves, asserting that the purported campaign against illegal mining is merely a strategy for NPP officials to gain control over the Galamsey trade. “Now that it’s all evident, there was no struggle, the whole thing was a fake, a plan, and a 419 for powerful government figures to seize control of the Galamsey business,” she stated.
These allegations come amid ongoing concerns about illegal mining’s impact on Ghana’s environment and economy, as well as criticisms of the government’s effectiveness in combating the issue.
