Special Aide to former President John Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari has emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to intensify efforts to promote women’s participation and empowerment in governance, particularly in decision-making roles. She pointed out that simply passing the Affirmative Action Act and recognizing that women constitute 52% of the population is insufficient for meaningful change.
The astute Lawyer stressed the importance of actively targeting women for key government positions, highlighting their invaluable contributions to society. She noted that Mahama’s decision to renominate Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his vice presidential candidate is a significant step towards this goal. This move signals a potential shift in Ghana’s political landscape, with the possibility of electing its first female president in the near future.
In alignment with these objectives, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), under Mahama’s leadership, has pledged in its 2024 manifesto to establish a Women’s Development Bank. This institution aims to empower women by providing targeted funding for enterprises owned and led by them. The initiative will be spearheaded and managed by women, operating under the leadership of Ghana’s first female Vice President.
Joyce Mogtari urged women who seek a government committed to promoting gender equality to vote for Mahama and Opoku-Agyemang. She stated that supporting this ticket is not only the right thing to do but also recognizes that women have consistently proven their efficiency and productivity in various roles.
