Four hundred and thirty police officers have graduated from the police academy.
The officers were commissioned into the Senior Officer Corps of the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, by the Vice President of the Republic H.E. Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Police Academy Cadet Course 53, comprised 305 males and 125 females, the highest intake of cadet officers since the establishment of the Ghana Police Academy.
“It surpasses the previous record set by Cadet Course 52, which enrolled three hundred and forty-four (344) cadet officers,” the Ghana Police Service touted in a press statement after the event.
Cadet Officer Achiburi Issah was adjudged the Overall Best Cadet Officer.
“We congratulate all the officers and wish them a successful career,” it added.
Speaking at the event, the Vice President affirmed that expanding the course intake has created valuable opportunities for all service personnel.
He added that the training for officers has also taken a commendable paradigm shift.
“The reforms also include the teaching and learning methods as well. There has been a paradigm shift in the training regime of cadet officers at the academy,” Graphic quotes him as saying.
Dr Bawumia further touted the professionalism of personnel in the current dispensation.
“Gone are the days when the police were the butt of everyone’s joke for unprofessional conduct. I watch in amazement as the Ghana Police Service, under extreme provocation from recent demonstrators, maintained their discipline and professionalism. It was not so long ago, we have long memories; need I remind some people that peaceful protesters were met with extreme brutality with batons and whips?
“Today, we have a new police service that we are all proud of. One that understands that maintaining law and order does not mean brutalising citizens, one that understands that it is a service for the people, one that understands that they are here to serve and not to lord it over others, and one that understands that security is a shared responsibility and must be done hand in hand with the community.”
