Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC),John Dramani Mahama has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo’s recent comments regarding the neglect of development in Ekumfi. John Mahama’s rebuke came after his tour of 14 constituencies in the Central Region, where he interacted with chiefs in Ekumfi, Brakwa, and Ajumako Besease on November 9, 2024.
The controversy stems from President Akufo-Addo’s January 2024 statement, in which he admitted to neglecting development in Ekumfi due to the constituency’s decision to vote out the ruling party’s candidate, Francis Ato Cudjoe, in the 2020 elections. This revelation was made during an interaction with traditional leaders from Ekumfi at the Jubilee House.
In a Facebook post on November 10, John Mahama condemned Akufo-Addo’s approach, characterizing it as “petty partisan politics” rather than responsible governance. The former president emphasized that every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, deserves to have their needs addressed and voices heard.
John Mahama pledged that if elected in the upcoming general elections, his government would ensure equitable development across all communities. “Development shall be a right for all, not a privilege for a few,” he declared, promising that no community would be left behind under an NDC administration led by himself and his running mate, Naana Jane.
The NDC flagbearer questioned the ethics of a government that ignores the needs of its citizens based on their democratic choices, framing it as not just a political issue but a matter of justice and accountability. Mahama’s comments highlight the ongoing debate about equitable development and political representation in Ghana’s democratic landscape.
