A poll conducted by UPDI Africa indicates that former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds a significant lead over Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the final days leading up to Ghana’s 2024 elections.
The poll, which surveyed 2,889 likely voters from November 24 to November 26, shows Mahama with 52% support compared to Bawumia’s 46%, while other candidates collectively account for just 2%.
The survey highlights a notable trend among younger voters, aged 18 to 40, where Mahama leads with 61% against Bawumia’s 36%. Both candidates enjoy strong backing from their respective party supporters, with 98% of NDC supporters pledging their votes for Mahama and 89%of NPP supporters for Bawumia.
In terms of floating voters, Mahama also demonstrates a commanding advantage, leading by 66%to 30% over Bawumia. The poll suggests that voter turnout among NDC supporters is crucial, while there are signs of apathy within the NPP ranks that could impact their performance on election day.
The methodology for this poll involved a representative telephone survey, allowing researchers to assert with 95% confidence that the results are accurate within a margin of error of 3 percentage points. UPDI Africa also expressed concerns about the lack of voter education and potential issues with the Electoral Commission’s handling of ballot preparations.
As Ghana approaches its general elections on December 7, 2024, these findings suggest a competitive race, with Mahama positioned as the frontrunner amid shifting voter sentiments and emerging concerns about electoral integrity.
