Former MP Slams Government’s Handling of Asante Akyem North MP’s Continued Detention

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, has criticised the government over what he describes as its failure to secure the release and return of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who is reportedly being held in the custody of another country.

He accused the government of treating the MP unfairly by failing to take decisive steps to intervene in his situation, questioning why the authorities appeared reluctant to use available diplomatic and governmental channels to address the matter.

“This government has really been unfair to Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong for leaving him to rot in the custody of another country. Why is the government pretending they can’t do anything about his case?” he questioned.

Speaking in an interview on Salt FM, Mr Baah Agyemang said the situation should be a major concern for residents of Agogo and the wider Asante Akyem area, regardless of political affiliations or personal relationships.

He acknowledged that his comments could be interpreted as being influenced by his family relationship with the detained MP but insisted that the circumstances surrounding the matter raised legitimate concerns.

He said residents of Agogo and Asante Akyem had not done enough to demonstrate concern and support for the MP, who, according to him, had been unable to return to Ghana after travelling abroad.

Mr Baah Agyemang, who said he had previously worked alongside Mr. Frimpong and also served in government, suggested that the authorities had the capacity to intervene but questioned why they had remained largely silent.

“I don’t want to play a blame game. But the truth is, why is the government so silent? Why can’t it use the power it has to ensure that the MP comes home? Even if there are issues, we can deal with them later,” he said.

He stressed that the government needed to demonstrate greater commitment to addressing the situation and take steps to facilitate the MP’s return to Ghana.

The former legislator’s comments add to growing concerns over the circumstances surrounding the detention of Mr. Frimpong and calls for government intervention to resolve the matter.
