Bawku Conflict: Asantehene Has Led “Productive” Discussions- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has led “productive” discussions in the ongoing mediation efforts to resolve the protracted Bawku conflict.

The President commended the Asantehene’s crucial role in fostering dialogue between the feuding factions.

Speaking during a courtesy call by a delegation of Mamprugu Chiefs on Thursday, July 17, 2025, President Mahama provided an update on the peace process.

“We’ve had productive discussions, and I particularly appreciate Naa-Yiri Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga’s vital cooperation and the concessions both sides are willing to make for lasting peace,” President Mahama stated.

During the meeting, President Mahama reiterated the critical importance of achieving a lasting resolution in Bawku, lamenting the transformation of the once-vibrant commercial hub into “a pale shadow of itself.”

He highlighted the severe impact of the conflict, noting, “The sight of armed youth and the exodus of professionals speaks to the immense toll this conflict has taken on everyone in the area, and indeed, on our national peace. Nobody is happy about this situation, and it requires our urgent and collective resolve.”

The President reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring safety and promoting dialogue in the region. He further urged all stakeholders to expedite the mediation process, emphasizing, “Peace in Bawku is not just a local issue; it is a matter of national importance.”
