New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman aspirant, Paul Akofo, has expressed strong confidence in his chances of successfully advancing to the next stage of the party’s internal electoral process following his vetting.
Mr. Akofo said he was satisfied with the conduct of the vetting, describing the process as fair, firm and characterised by frank and substantive discussions.
Speaking after appearing before the vetting committee, the NPP chairmanship aspirant said he believed he had adequately addressed the questions put to him and had no indication that the committee was dissatisfied with his responses.
“Really good. I don’t think there was anything I couldn’t answer, and I did not indicate that anybody was dissatisfied with my answers. So, I would rate my chances as good,” he said.
According to him, the vetting process provided an opportunity for a serious examination of his ideas, leadership credentials and strategic thinking, rather than being a mere formality for candidates seeking to contest the position.
He commended the composition and calibre of the vetting committee, saying its members demonstrated a high level of preparedness by raising questions that challenged him to think beyond his immediate responses.
“The process, I believe, was fair. It was firm, and in fact, there was a lot of frank discussion. The calibre of the committee is not small,” Mr. Akofo stated.
He disclosed that some of the questions posed by the committee had not been anticipated but said they had given him fresh perspectives that he intended to incorporate into his broader plans for the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“Some of them, I am definitely going to include in my strategic planning for the party going into 2028. Just wait. The calibre of the committee has been good,” he said.
Mr. Akofo, however, declined to disclose details of the specific questions asked by the committee, particularly those relating to strategies he intends to pursue to strengthen the NPP and position it to regain political power.
He explained that his decision was informed by a confidentiality agreement he signed before the vetting exercise.
“It’s not a question of strategies that they mentioned, but rather the questions they asked about certain strategies. Those questions get you thinking on your feet, and I think that’s good,” he explained.
When pressed on the nature of the questions, Mr. Akofo reiterated that he was bound by confidentiality and therefore could not discuss the details of the exchanges with the committee.
“I signed a document before they started questioning me. I signed a confidentiality agreement, so I cannot talk about it,” he said.
He stressed that divulging such information would be particularly inappropriate because some of the issues discussed concerned strategies that could form part of the party’s efforts to return to government in 2028.
“Especially when it concerns strategy, particularly strategies we are going to use to try to get into power, so forgive me if I don’t go into that,” he added.
As the NPP moves toward the next phase of its internal electoral process, Mr. Akofo will now await the committee’s decision while continuing to build support for his chairmanship ambition.
