President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered the keynote address at the 12th Quadrennial Delegates Congress of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) held at the Pentecost Convention Centre. In his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the close collaboration between his government and Organized Labour over the past seven years. This partnership has been instrumental in resolving industrial disputes amicably, thereby ensuring a stable environment conducive to economic growth and job creation.
Highlighting the success of various initiatives, the President noted that the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) have provided employment opportunities for over 700,000 young Ghanaians since 2017. These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers and pensioners across the nation.
President Akufo-Addo also pointed out substantial improvements to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) scheme, including a 25% increase in pensions in 2023—the highest since the introduction of the contributory Three-Tier Pension Scheme. This increase demonstrates the government’s dedication to ensuring that senior citizens are well supported in their retirement.
Additionally, the President highlighted the significant growth of pension assets, which have increased by over 350% from GH¢15.7 billion in 2016 to GH¢71.69 billion in 2024. This growth is a testament to the government’s commitment to safeguarding the future of all Ghanaians.
