Minority Has Been Supportive, Not Obstructive – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the Minority Caucus has played a constructive role in the legislative process despite political differences in the House.

Speaking at the Crystal Ball Series organised by the Citizens’ Bureau of Parliament in collaboration with PN Africa, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reflected on Parliament’s work over the past year and the role played by the Minority.

According to him, the Minority has consistently supported key government measures intended to strengthen public financial management and ensure effective governance.

“The Minority has remained supportive and not destructive or obstructive,” he stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin explained that the approval of the national budget and appropriation measures remains one of Parliament’s most important responsibilities, noting that such decisions help ensure that government spending aligns with national priorities.

“The passage of the national budget and appropriation measures has been central to Parliament’s work, ensuring that government expenditure aligns with national priorities,” he added.

The Minority Leader also used the platform to raise concerns about some procedural practices within the legislative process.

“Having laid the foundations, allow me to share reflections on the workings of this Parliament over the past year,” he said, before highlighting what he described as the “abuse of certificates of urgency” in parliamentary proceedings.

He stressed the need for greater adherence to proper legislative procedures to ensure transparency and accountability in the lawmaking process.
