Nigerian Military Helicopter Crashes with 32 aboard; Rescue Operations Underway

A Nigerian military aircraft carrying 32 people has crashed near a naval base in Igbokoda, a coastal town in Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria, after losing contact with air traffic controllers while en route to Lagos.

The aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members, according to Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo.

In a statement on Monday, October 5, 2026, Keyamo said air traffic controllers lost communication with the aircraft at 0813 GMT and were unable to re-establish contact before the aircraft was reported missing.

The wreckage was subsequently located near a naval base in Igbokoda, where search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were any fatalities or injuries following the crash.

The incident is among Nigeria’s most serious military aviation accidents in recent years and is expected to heighten concerns over aviation safety and the operational readiness of the country’s military aircraft.

Investigations are expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding the loss of communication and the factors that led to the crash.

Rescue teams and relevant authorities remain at the scene as efforts continue to determine the condition of those on board and establish the cause of the accident.
