The New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced today its intention to pursue legal action against the Electoral Commission (EC) following the latter’s decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, delivered the party’s position during a press conference held on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Mr. Frimpong refuted the EC’s assertion that both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had mutually agreed to the rerun during a meeting held on Tuesday.
Mr. Frimpong clarified that the NPP’s representatives at the said meeting, namely Evans Nimako, Director of Research and Elections, and Ebenezer Nartey, former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, “fiercely opposed the position of the Electoral Commission.” He emphasized, “So it cannot be that after extensive discussion, the EC is painting a picture as if they agreed to their roadmap.”
The General Secretary urged the EC to uphold its institutional integrity, describing it as a “respectable arm” of governance.
The EC has scheduled the rerun for July 11, 2025.1 In a statement explaining its decision, the Commission stated that the results from 19 polling stations, which were used for collation, had not been verified by their respective Presiding Officers. The EC’s statement noted, “It is instructive to note that, the Commission was able to secure the Presiding Officers’ verification and confirmation for 18 scanned Polling Station results – Agents of both parties also approved same. A rerun will therefore not be held in those Polling Stations.”
