Ghana Reaffirms SDG Commitment, Prioritizes Maternal Health

Ghana officially launched its latest Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report on Tuesday, July 8, reaffirming its dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event saw the participation of President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other key development stakeholders.

Following the launch, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang took to her official Facebook page to reflect on the day’s importance. She stated, “Today, I joined the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to launch Ghana’s Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report on the implementation of the SDGs. Present were CSOs who indicated their commitment to the SDGs in Ghana and globally.”

In his address, President Mahama emphasized the significant challenges Ghana faces in meeting its development targets. He specifically highlighted healthcare as a paramount priority, underscoring the urgent need to eliminate preventable maternal deaths and ensure equitable access to health services for all citizens.

“Of particular relevance to him was the need to reduce the maternal mortality rate to zero and to make healthcare accessible to all Ghanaians regardless of where they reside,” the Vice President noted, reiterating the President’s focus.

The VNR Report serves as Ghana’s self-assessment of its progress on the SDGs and outlines strategies aimed at bridging any remaining gaps in achieving these critical development objectives.
