Calm has been restored in Hamile, Upper West Region, after violent clashes occurred between local residents and immigration officers at the border post on Saturday evening. The unrest began when youths accused immigration officials of misconduct and alleged that gunmen from Burkina Faso were allowed to enter Ghana unlawfully.
Tensions escalated after immigration officers reportedly attempted to repatriate a Burkinabe woman who was seeking refuge, leading the youth to storm the border post. During the incident, property was damaged and a vehicle was set on fire.
In response, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), through its Head of Public Affairs, Michael Amoako Attah, issued a statement urging calm and restraint. The service confirmed that an investigation into the events is ongoing and assured the public that appropriate actions will be taken once the inquiry is complete.
Security forces have since intervened to restore order, with peace prevailing in the area as of Monday morning.
