The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that the party will approach the 2028 general elections with practical, costed and workable policy proposals, while challenging the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to account for its campaign promises.
He said the internet had made it increasingly difficult for politicians to escape public scrutiny over promises they made but failed to fulfil, warning that voters could easily revisit their past statements and compare them with their performance in office.
“Today, we have something called ‘a few moments later’ on the internet, and whatever you promised but failed to deliver can be replayed to you. The NDC promised a lot. ‘Omo akyi gu hɔ,’” Dr Bawumia said.
He made the remarks at a thanksgiving service organised by the NPP at the Pentecost Church in Sunyani to express gratitude for the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections.
The former Vice-President used the occasion to signal the party’s readiness to begin preparations for the 2028 elections, stressing that its next campaign would be anchored on policies that are not only attractive to voters but also financially realistic and capable of implementation.
“We’re going into the 2028 elections with ideas, costed ideas, practical ideas and workable ideas,” he stated.
With the 2028 elections on the horizon, Dr Bawumia’s emphasis on costed and workable ideas signals an effort to position the NPP around policy credibility and practical solutions, as political parties prepare to present their programmes to the electorate.
The challenge for the NPP, however, will be to translate that commitment into clearly defined proposals, supported by credible cost estimates and implementation plans that can withstand public scrutiny.
For the NDC, the remarks place renewed emphasis on the need for governing parties to demonstrate progress on their promises, as voters increasingly assess political commitments against measurable outcomes.
