The Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has challenged President John Dramani Mahama’s recent announcement to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees, urging a more substantial cost-cutting measure.
Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, called on the President to close the fuel depot located at the Osu Castle if the administration is truly committed to reducing expenditures.
President Mahama, in a statement released on July 15, 2025, declared the immediate cessation of fuel allowances for political appointees. The President cited the need to save national funds and emphasized that leadership must also demonstrate sacrifice when calling upon citizens to do the same.
However, MP Nyarko’s remarks suggest that while the scrapping of allowances is a step, a more impactful action would be to dismantle the fuel depot, implying it represents a significant and potentially unnecessary expense. The MP’s challenge puts further pressure on the presidency to demonstrate tangible commitment to fiscal prudence beyond the announced allowance cuts.
