The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally petitioned the diplomatic community over the detention of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, accusing the government of President John Dramani Mahama of political persecution and intimidation.
The petition, delivered to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Accra by Deputy Minority Chief Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who led a delegation of NPP executives and supporters, alleged that state institutions were being manipulated to suppress opposition voices and unlawfully detain party members.
“Your Excellency, there is absolutely no reason for the President to be overseeing this or instructing state institutions to handle matters in this manner. We have basic human rights, one of which is that for bailable offences, an accused person has the right to bail.” He noted.
The outspoken legislator further accused the presiding judge of prejudging the case involving Abronye DC even before the matter had been fully heard in court.
According to him, the NPP deliberately chose peaceful diplomatic engagement over staging mass street protests out of respect for the international community and Ghana’s democratic image.
He said the action had the endorsement of the party’s top hierarchy, including the Minority Leadership, National Executives, and the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, the atmosphere surrounding the petition quickly intensified after NPP National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha issued a fiery warning to the Mahama administration over what he described as the “harassment and intimidation” of NPP members.
“Trust me, when the NPP says we will react, we will react,” Salam Mustapha declared. “We are not a small political party. Over four million people voted for us, and if this nonsense does not stop, we will weaponize our support base and make this country extremely ungovernable for them.”
Salam Mustapha insisted that Abronye DC must be released immediately, warning that the opposition would fiercely resist any further attempts to target its members.
“If you turn us into enemies, we will give you rebellion — take it from me,” he said, while pledging to mobilize the party’s youth base across the country if the situation persists.
