Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed that Parliament has secured the services of a Ghanaian-born Dutch lawyer in The Hague to work toward the release of detained Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
The revelation comes amid growing concern over the circumstances surrounding the MP’s arrest during a transit stop at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Speaking in a media interview, Mr. Dafeamekpor noted that Parliament, in collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague, has moved swiftly to secure legal representation for the detained MP.
“There is a prosecutor handling the matter in The Hague, so as a next step, we decided to secure legal representation for him. A Ghanaian-born, Dutch-trained lawyer has been consulted in coordination with Ghana’s ambassador in The Hague to handle the matter,” he said.
Narrating the incident, the South Dayi MP explained that the embattled legislator was travelling on a private visit to the United Kingdom but was transiting through Amsterdam aboard a KLM flight when he was intercepted by security officials.
According to him, the MP departed Accra on Saturday evening and arrived at Schiphol Airport in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“He was flying on a KLM flight, so naturally the plane transited through Schiphol in Amsterdam. It was in Amsterdam that he was stopped, briefly questioned, and detained,” the Minority Chief Whip stated.
He explained that the incident occurred during the transit process at about 6:30 a.m., shortly after the flight landed around 5 a.m.
“Since then, he has remained in detention,” he added.
Mr. Dafeamekpor further revealed that preliminary information gathered from security operatives suggests that the detention may be linked to an arrest warrant allegedly issued by authorities in the United States.
However, he stressed that neither the MP nor Ghanaian officials had yet received any formal documentation outlining the basis of the warrant or the allegations involved.
“We have interacted with him, and he himself does not know exactly why he has been detained. The snippets of information we have received indicate that there may be a warrant issued by the United States of America for his arrest, but we are yet to receive any formal communication from the security operatives,” he explained.
The development has triggered anxiety within political circles and among supporters of the Asante Akyem North MP, with many closely monitoring diplomatic and legal efforts aimed at resolving the situation.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his detention, Mr. Dafeamekpor indicated that the MP is coping well under the circumstances. “He is doing fine in detention, although naturally shaken by what has happened to him,” he concluded
