Rev. Enoch Thompson Elected Christian Council Chairman Amid High Expectations

A new chapter has begun for the Christian Council of Ghana following the election of Rev. Enoch Nii Narh Thompson as Chairman of the influential religious body, a move already being hailed as a major turning point for Christian leadership and national unity in Ghana.

Rev. Thompson emerged victorious at the Council’s just-ended 2026 Annual General Meeting, drawing widespread praise from both religious and political circles as expectations rise over the future direction of one of Ghana’s most powerful faith-based institutions.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Presidential Envoy Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah described the election as a “well-deserved recognition” of Rev. Thompson’s longstanding dedication to Christian ministry, national development, and ecumenical engagement.

According to the statement, Rev. Thompson’s elevation comes at a crucial time when Ghana continues to rely heavily on faith-based institutions to promote peace, moral discipline, and national cohesion amid growing social and economic challenges.

“We commend the Christian Council of Ghana for this significant decision and express confidence in Rev. Thompson’s ability to provide strong, visionary, and unifying leadership as the Council continues its important role in promoting peace, moral values, national cohesion, and Christian witness in Ghana,” Mr. Afriyie-Ankrah stated.

Observers within the Christian community say the new Chairman is expected to play a critical role in shaping national conversations on morality, governance, peacebuilding, and interfaith cooperation, especially as Ghana navigates a rapidly changing political and social landscape.

The Office of the Presidential Envoy also paid glowing tribute to outgoing Chairman, Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. B.D.K. Agbeko, praising his dedicated leadership and close collaboration with the state during his tenure.

The statement further stressed the government’s commitment to deepening collaboration with religious institutions to advance peacebuilding, national unity, and development.

“As the nation continues to strengthen collaboration between faith-based institutions and the State towards peacebuilding, national unity, and development, we look forward to working closely with Rev. Thompson, the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana, and all ecumenical bodies for the advancement of Ghana and the well-being of our people,” the statement added.

Rev. Thompson’s election is already generating excitement among sections of the Christian fraternity, with many hopeful that his leadership will inject renewed energy into the Council’s mission and amplify the voice of the Church on critical national issues.
