Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has commissioned 100 new buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, as part of government efforts to revitalise Ghana’s public transportation sector and improve commuter experience across the country.
The commissioning ceremony, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and management of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), forms part of a broader government intervention to deploy 300 buses nationwide to strengthen safe, affordable, and accessible public transport services.
According to the Vice President, the newly acquired buses have been fully registered, insured, inspected, and prepared for immediate deployment to high-demand routes across the country to ease transportation challenges faced by commuters.
She praised the management and staff of MMTL, led by Managing Director Kale Caesar, for their commitment to improving public transport services. She also acknowledged the role played by the Ministry of Transport and key partners, particularly MAC Ghana, in making the initiative a reality.
Speaking at the event, Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed that an efficient transport system remains critical to national development, noting that the intervention is aimed at reducing the burden on commuters while restoring confidence and dignity in public transportation.
“This intervention aims to ease commuter burdens, improve accessibility, and provide more reliable and affordable options while restoring dignity and confidence in the public transport system,” she stated.
She further expressed optimism that Ghana’s long-term industrialisation agenda would increasingly encourage local participation in the manufacturing and assembly of transport components, a move expected to create jobs and strengthen the country’s industrial base.
The Vice President also charged management and staff of MMTL to ensure proper maintenance and disciplined operation of the buses, insisting that public investment must be matched with accountability and quality service delivery.
“Commuters deserve a transport system that is safe, reliable, and respectful of their needs,” she emphasised.
The commissioning of the buses reflects government’s broader commitment to infrastructure development and improved public service delivery, with authorities hopeful the initiative will significantly improve mobility and reduce transportation difficulties in major communities nationwide.
